The Red Lion sits just over the Welsh border in the historic market town of Knighton; the town itself actually straddles the border between Powys and Shropshire. With excellent access to both cycling and walking paths (two National Trails meet here) it is the perfect place from which to explore the beautiful Welsh Marches.
We aim to offer a relaxed B&B in a traditional inn setting. A comfy lounge and well appointed rooms are at your disposal. Our honesty bar boasts some local ales, alongside a selection of spirits should you wish to relax with a beer or take a nightcap to your room.
About Knighton
Marches is a term meaning disputed territory, and evidence of this areas turbulent past is very apparent. Knighton itself has two Norman castle mounds, and some of the best-preserved remains of Offa’s Dyke are within a two-minute walk of The Red Lion (in fact the Offa’s Dyke National Trail runs right past our front door).
Things are friendlier now, and Knighton is a paradise for walkers, cyclists and explorers of all abilities. It became a ‘Walkers are Welcome’ town in 2007 and at The Red Lion we welcome muddy boots and tales of your exploits! Two National Trails meet here, which is a unique occurrence in Wales; the Offa’s Dyke Trail and Glyndwr’s Way. The Offa’s Dyke Centre in Knighton is an excellent place to start, and can provide you with maps for the myriad trails and circular paths that cross the beautiful countryside of this outstanding area. History buffs will find plenty to engage them, whether you are interested in earthworks and tales of Welsh princes, Norman castles or simply lovely half-timbered architecture. After all of this fresh air and excitement, we think you deserve to unwind and enjoy a glass of something rejuvenating! Book a getaway break with us and leave feeling refreshed and inspired.
